Distinguished and Famous people from Ulladulla
📖 Henry Kendall
Henry Kendall's beginnings belong to the Ulladulla district, where he was born in 1839. His later working life took him into whaling, clerical employment and forestry, alongside the poetry for which he became known. The district also helped him into print: local subscribers supported the publication of Poems and Songs in 1862. His subsequent collections included Leaves from Australian Forests and Songs from the Mountains. Literary recognition did not guarantee a comfortable life; illness and financial difficulties repeatedly interrupted his career. Ulladulla's association includes both his birthplace and practical community support for a young writer.
⛵ James Warden
James Warden learned ship carpentry in Britain before arriving in Australia and establishing a shipbuilding partnership with his brother at Ulladulla. Parliamentary records credit their firm with building eleven or twelve vessels. Around 1855 he turned from boatbuilding to farming after purchasing Boolgata in the district. He served as an Ulladulla alderman and mayor on several occasions, then represented Shoalhaven in the NSW Legislative Assembly during the 1870s. His varied occupations followed the town's own working history, from its harbour and timber trade to agriculture and the demands of a growing municipality.
